Destination Guide: Where to Stay in Cabo
Destination Guide: Where to Stay in Cabo
San José del Cabo vs. The Corridor vs. Cabo San Lucas — which area is right for your trip?
Planning a trip to Cabo can feel surprisingly confusing — especially when you realize “Cabo” isn’t just one location at all. Los Cabos is made up of three distinct areas, each with its own personality, pace, and way of experiencing the Baja coast. Choosing the best area to stay in Cabo shapes the entire chapter of your trip — from the beaches you’ll spend your days on to the restaurants and atmosphere you’ll return to each night.
Living in Orange County, CA I have been traveling to the Los Cabos area for decades. I've helped dozens of clients plan trips to Los Cabos, and the question I hear most often is: "Where should we actually stay?"
By the end of this guide, you’ll know exactly which area fits your travel style — or I can help you choose the chapter that is right for you.
The three main areas in Los Cabos
Picture a 20-mile stretch of coastline at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.
At one end is San José del Cabo.
At the other end is Cabo San Lucas.
In between is a string of luxury resorts known as the Corridor.
Each area feels like its own distinct experience along the Baja coastline — here’s how to choose the one that matches the story you want this trip to tell.
San José del Cabo: Culture, Charm and a Slower Pace

San José del Cabo — known for its art galleries, courtyard dining, and the weekly Thursday Art Walk that brings the town to life at night.
Vibe & Atmosphere
San José is the more traditional, laidback sister of the two towns. Think cobblestone streets, art galleries, jewelry shops, and intimate restaurants with courtyards glowing with candlelight and string lights. The pace is slower, the crowds are thinner, and it feels like a more authentic, local side of Cabo.
The weekly Thursday Art Walk is one of my favorite things to do — galleries stay open late, and local artists fill the plaza with paintings and sculptures. December is especially magical when the town is decorated for Christmas and the plaza hosts weekly festivities.
Beaches & Swimming
The beach here is long and beautiful, but not ideal for swimming due to strong currents. Most hotels prohibit entering the water, even for wading. Travelers typically enjoy the ocean views from resort pools or head to the Corridor for swimmable beaches.
Where to Stay
Boutique hotels are located within the town center, while higherend resorts sit 5–15 minutes away.
Top luxury options near San José:

- Viceroy Los Cabos
- JW Marriott Los Cabos
- One&Only Palmilla (just outside town)
Golf Nearby
- Puerto Los Cabos (amazing comfort stations — some of the best tacos we had in Cabo!)
- Club Campestre San José
- Cabo Real
- Vidanta (9hole course accessible if staying at their property)
- Palmilla (short drive)
Best for: Couples, foodies, culture lovers, golfers and anyone who prefers a quieter, more local feel.
The Corridor: Cabo’s Most Refined Resort Experience

The Corridor — Cabo’s most refined stretch of coastline, known for its oceanfront resorts, swimmable beaches, and a more private, resort-driven experience.
Vibe & Atmosphere
The Corridor is the 20mile stretch between the two towns, lined with some of the most beautiful resorts in Mexico. If you’re picturing a serene infinity pool overlooking the Sea of Cortez, you’re picturing the Corridor.
Beaches & Swimming
This is where you’ll find the best swimmable beaches in Los Cabos — including Chileno Beach and Santa Maria Beach, both calm, protected coves perfect for snorkeling and swimming.
Swimmable beaches in the Corridor — calmer waters and protected coves make this stretch of coastline ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Best for: Luxury travelers, golfers, honeymooners, and anyone prioritizing beach access, privacy, and relaxation.
Cabo San Lucas: Energy, Convenience and the Classic Cabo Experience
Cabo San Lucas — the lively marina at the center of it all, with easy access to water sports, swimmable beaches, dining, and nightlife.
Vibe & Atmosphere
Cabo San Lucas is the lively marina town most people picture when they think of “Cabo.” With its iconic El Arco rock formation as the backdrop, the town is energetic, social, and always buzzing with water taxis, jet skis, beach clubs, and a waterfront lined with restaurants and bars. The marina is also the hub for whale watching tours, snorkeling trips, deep sea fishing, and sunset cruises.
Beaches & Swimming
Medano Beach is the most social beach in Los Cabos — swimmable, walkable, and full of activity. It also has the best beach massages for a great price (with a drink included afterward). We come here every time we are in the area. Just know you’ll hear music from nearby clubs mixed with the sound of the waves. Typical Cabo San Lucas!
Where to Stay
You will find a mix of large allinclusive resorts and smaller boutique hotels, all within easy reach of restaurants and nightlife.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Seasonality
Cabo San Lucas gets especially crowded during spring break and the holidays. For a quieter experience, choose San José or a secluded Corridor resort.
Hurricane Season
Typically June–October, with the highest risk in September and October. Travel insurance is smart during these months.
Water Safety
Not all beaches are swimmable. The Pacific side is rough; the Sea of Cortez side is calmer (Medano Beach and the Corridor beaches). Always check conditions.
Whale Watching Season
Whale watching season typically is mid-December through mid-April, but the best months are January through March. The whales come to the warm Baja waters to mate and breed, so you will typically see a lot of breaching as whales “flirt” and also many babies. We love to visit Cabo during this time of year.
